India puts great emphasis in developing closer economic ties with the Association of South-East Asian Nations (ASEAN) because the region is a major hub of manufacturing activities and its share in global output, foreign direct investments, exports, and imports have grown consistently. Within the ASEAN, Vietnam, a small country with a population of only 95.4 million persons, is an export powerhouse and has often been dubbed as a miracle economy. Vietnam is the 4th largest trading partner of India among ASEAN countries after Indonesia, Singapore and Malaysia. Vietnam is the 8th largest destination of India’s exports globally and second largest export destination for India in the ASEAN region. To achieve the target of developmental goals set by our Hon’ble Prime Minister, Shri Narendra Modi, we need to have stronger strategic and economic partnership with countries like Vietnam. Moreover, in the current crisis situation, it becomes more important to understand and explore new ways of collaboration with our important allies.
